Wanted: a home for Juice

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

It will come as no surprise to those of you who know me well that I am pining for a dog. Like, in a bad way. I haven’t had a full-time dog in my life for about six or seven years, and I’m in full withdrawal. Hence why I keep searching the BC SPCA adoptable animals for the perfect pet.

And the other day, I found him.

Juice (yes, his name is Juice) is a greyhound cross border collie with energy to burn and an obvious sense of humour. I mean, just look at him. This is no ordinary dog. So yes, he’s probably quite large (I have yet to meet him in person). And yes, his description warns of his ability to climb fences. But that just means he’s smart, right? And agile. I think he’d make a perfect running companion. And that note about separation anxiety? Whatever. It means he’s affectionate.

And can you look at him without grinning? No. I thought not.

Now, the only minor problem is that if I adopt Juice, I will get evicted. There are NO pets allowed in my building, with the exception of the lovebird one tenant wears on his head.

I’m currently searching Craigslist for a pet-friendly apartment while at the same time trying to convince P. that Juice will light up his life too (he’s not buying it). But in the meantime I’m worried that Juice has been at the SPCA for too long. He needs a home and he needs it stat.

So. I’m putting out the call. Anyone have room in their heart (and house) for a big loveable pup? Just look at him. You know you want to…

I’ll weed your garden if you edit my manuscript…

Sound too good to be true? Not anymore, thanks to a new initiative that came out of the Writers Union’s nation-wide professional development days I talked about last post. Writers across Canada have recently realized that when we reach out to other writers rather than, say, huddling in our offices speaking only to our housecats, we all get more done.

So say Author A in Carstairs, Alberta is a really good copy-editor, but needs time away from her rambunctious children to write in peace. And Author B over in Waskesiu, Saskatchewan has this gorgeous little cottage in the woods that will be vacant for a week, but also has a manuscript that needs editing.

What do they do? Why, log onto Facebook, of course! Cause that’s where they’ll find the Talent Swap for Canadian Writers, which allows writers to trade favours (and make friends). They find each other, they swap, they both go on to snag fat book deals AND get on Oprah! It’s that simple. Well, almost.

Now, I personally am looking for a writing retreat on a beach in Belize. And in exchange for it? I’m willing to walk your dog.

Takers? Anyone?

- The publishing industry is in an unprecedented state of upheaval.

- Print books are dying out. Actually, they’re already dead. They just doesn’t know it yet.

- There has never been a more exciting time to be a writer. Ready or not, the wild ride has begun!
