Harper Weekend launch

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Best gig ever! On Saturday June 5th, I get to sit and read. That’s it! Well, okay, there’s a little more to it. I actually have to walk down to Chapters on Robson for 12 pm, then find the big, beautiful chair that the HarperCollins folks will have set up in a faux living room near the front window. And then I get to sit and read. Wa-hoo!

It’s all part of the launch of Harper’s newest imprint, Harper Weekend. Harper authors are taking turns participating in an in-store read-in. Throughout the day, any shopper who buys a Harper Weekend book OR any book written by the featured authors gets a raffle ticket to WIN the big beautiful leather chair I’ll be sitting in. And to make a great thing even better, a portion of all proceeds will go to the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation.

So get yer book-loving selves down to Chapters on Saturday! You could use a good reading chair, couldn’t you?

Summer reading list

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Yesterday, I triumphantly finished the very last novel I have to read for theĀ Creative Writing for Children class I’m teaching this term. Each week, we tackle a different novel study, so for the past three months, I’ve done nothing but read upper middle-grade / lower YA novels. And I have to say, I’m pooped. My students have far better stamina than me.

But now I can finally turn my attention to my growing stack of summer reading! This includes, but is not limited to: Nice Recovery by Susan Juby, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon, Finding Violet Park by Jenny Valentine, and one really big, meaty Russian novel, yet TBD (I must consult with my father on this one. He is the expert on all things epic and Russian).

Oh, and there’s one more novel on my list. One that segues nicely into what I actually sat down to tell you about. Vancouver authorĀ James McCann has just released his newest YA novel, Flying Feet, which promises an exciting look into the world of underground mixed martial arts. James will be launching this novel on Sunday June 13th at the Cameron Rec Centre in Burnaby. There will be readings, refreshments, and even a tae kwon do demo! Come one come all!

Art on the Spot – May 29th

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

On May 29th, I’ll be leading a nature exploration and writing workshop as part of the Shadbolt Centre’s Art on the Spot series. It’ll also be a preview for my Creative Nature Writing summer camp at the Shadbolt.

My creative nature writing classes are really my specialty, combining the two things I’m most passionate about: writing and the outdoors. This is where my inner bird nerd meets my inner word nerd. It’s GREAT fun!

The adventure starts at 11 am with a walk around Burnaby’s beautiful Deer Lake, and it’s open to all interested families. Come one come all!

Happy Monday! And a photo.

I have nothing but an adorable photo for you today. This tiny pirate girl obviously already has great taste in literature. You can bet that she chose that book off the shelf herself, with no pressure from her auntie at all…

Thar be new cover art, mateys!

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

We here at rachelledelaney.com (“Too jet-lagged to think of a catchy motto”) have decided that it’s time to unveil the new covers of The Ship of Lost Souls (second printing) and its upcoming sequel, The Lost Souls of Island X (August 2010!). We have decided this because we saw them on Amazon.ca today, which must mean it’s time for the whole world to see them. (I should note, however, that Amazon has the wrong pub date for Book 2. But don’t worry. I’m on it.)

So without further ado, here they are, in all their piratey glory. Ooooh. Arrrrgh.
