New beginnings

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

It appears to be the end of an era. A short era, mind you, but an era nonetheless. For the past two and a half years, I’ve been a full-time freelance writer/editor/teacher, dabbling in all kinds of projects — everything from writing interpretive panels for hiking trails to helping people write their personal narratives to editing a graphic novel. I must say, I have a pretty cool resume now.

But something new and exciting has come up — a dream-come-true kind of job that’ll allow me to combine my writing, editing, and obsession with saving the planet. I’ve accepted a one-year contract as Editorial Production Coordinator at the David Suzuki Foundation. I probably don’t have to tell you about the awesomeness of the DSF. Especially if you’re Canadian. For the past few months, I’ve been volunteering with its public information department, and one thing that has really struck me is just how profoundly David Suzuki has touched people’s lives with the knowledge he brings them. So I’m super excited to work for the Man Himself and the amazing foundation he and his wife Tara have created.

I’ll be honest, I’m a little intimidated. And I suspect I’ll miss being able to wake up in the morning and stroll to yoga class before starting in on my work. I’ll miss working in pyjamas and at coffeeshops (not at the same time, of course). But I’m very excited to be part of a team again. And to know that weekends are exclusively for novel-writing, and not for 8 freelance projects at once.

So the countdown begins. Seven more days til a new beginning. I can’t wait!

Authors taking action

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

Those of you who don’t spend copious amounts of time on Twitter (and I well remember the day when I was one of you!) might have missed out on a really interesting phenomenon lately. It started with one fabulous YA author by the name of Maureen Johnson, who’s written such gems as 13 Little Blue Envelopes and Scarlett Fever. I began following Maureen’s tweets about half a year ago, and she never fails to impress me, not only because she’s HILARIOUS, but because she makes incredible things happen.

Case in point. When the earthquake hit Christchurch, NZ in February, MJ asked her Twitter followers (all 26,000 of them) to help her donate to ShelterBox, a disaster relief organization that sends emergency shelter and supplies to people in disaster areas. Each ShelterBox contains a tent, blankets, water purifier, tools, and many other crucial things. You can track all their deployments online.

In a few days, MJ and her tweeps (many of them teens) had raised $15,202. That’s 16 shelterboxes!

So of course, when the earthquake hit Japan last week, she was at it again. But this time, other authors got involved too, donating signed copies of their books as raffle prizes to those who donated to ShelterBox. The number of donors skyrocketed. I donated, and offered signed copies of The Ship of Lost Souls and The Lost Souls of Island X.

So this morning, MJ announced the results of this spur-of-the-moment fundraiser: $14,202 raised. That’s almost $30,000 for both Japan and New Zealand. As an experienced fundraiser myself, I am IMPRESSED.

It’s not too late to donate to ShelterBox. Or follow MJ on Twitter. Why not do both?

Getting Started In Children’s Books

Friday, February 11th, 2011

In a few weeks — February 28th to be precise — I’ll be taking part in a panel discussion called Getting Started in Children’s Books. It’ll take place at the Vancouver Public Library (Central Branch), and I think it’ll be really interesting. I’m intrigued to find out more about how my esteemed fellow panelists got their start.
